## History of eucalyptus pulp

Production of pulp from eucalyptus trees started in the 1950s in Brazil. Increased demand for paper in South America led Brazilian scientists to seek out a new source for pulp. You may be interested to know:

### Eucalyptus pulp in data 

**1950s** -  South American demand for paper industry products was growing. Imported softwood pulp became too expensive and was limited in availability. Suzano's research into other sources for pulp began, and the choice fell on eucalyptus, which was used locally in Brazil by other industries.

**1957** - First bleached kraft pulp made from eucalyptus by Suzano.

**1961** - High-quality printing paper made of 100%  eucalyptus pulp was introduced by the Suzano Company.

**1975** - The world discovered eucalyptus pulp, and export began.

**1980** - Research never stops. Suitable plants for the environment were found, and optimization of the process includes sustainable principles, long before the world started to talk about ESG.

**1990s** - Eucalyptus pulp increases from 1 % to 25 % of the world market share for pulp.

**2020s** - Research continues. New possibilities for this great crop of the future are discovered every day. So many possibilities, so many different end products, and so sustainable!

**2022** - Suzano now makes 11 m tons of eucalyptus pulp for +20 applications such as copy paper, uncoated freesheet, coated, white top kraft liner, décor, glassine, release, filter, thermal paper, printed circuit board, napkins, bath tissue, kitchen towel, facial tissue, interleaving, folding boxboard and SBS, paper cup, straws…

## Eucalyptus cultivation in Brazil

What if we could get material for the growing paper industry from a sustainable source? From five times more productive than other sources, built on research, with respect for the environment - fauna and flora?

Susainable Production of Eucalyptus Pulp

## Properties of eucalyptus pulp

 The number of paper products using eucalyptus pulp may surprise you - kitchen towels, napkins, toilet paper, glassine, decorative paper, paperboard, printing paper, thermal paper, interleaving, filters, and much more. So many applications!

Eucalyptus is homogenous for two reasons - it comes from plantations managed by Suzano and because of the favourable climatic conditions in Brazil, where winter is mild compared to other countries.


#### The basic properties of pulp are derived from fiber : 

- Length
- Flexibility 
- Uniformity


For example, for the production of soft tissue paper, pulp with short fiber length is required. On the other hand, uniformity and the ability of fibers to flatten easily are essential for the production of cardboard.

Thanks to research, scientists know which compound is needed for which paper industry product. Because of close cooperation with customers, they are able to prepare customized pulp.
